Loyalty Day Open Thread

Today is May 1st, which is May Day, mainly recognized in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the day that was chosen to mark spring fertility of the land, the livestock, and people who apparently like to erect and decorate tall poles then proceed to dance around them.

Today is also International Workers’ Day, which must make self-declared socialist and new presidential candidate Bernie Sanders want to do a happy old collectivist geezer dance.

In what could be seen as being in direct opposition to the socialist-themed holiday, it’s Loyalty Day here in the United States, as well. As proclaimed by President Eisenhower in 1955 in response to the rise of communism and officially proclaimed every year by every president since 1958…

Loyalty Day is a special day for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom.

May 1st is also–gee, another “Something” Day? Yes, today is Law Day, too, which is a lot like St. Patrick’s Day for attorneys, I imagine. So if you see men and women in business attire carousing in the streets with drinks in hands, vomiting in the gutters, and getting into fistfights over statutes, you’ll know why. President Eisenhower first proclaimed Law Day in 1958, and the day was federally codified in 1961. The law concerning Law Day states that:

Law Day, U.S.A., is a special day of celebration by the people of the United States—
(1) in appreciation of their liberties and the reaffirmation of their loyalty to the United States and of their rededication to the ideals of equality and justice under law in their relations with each other and with other countries; and
(2) for the cultivation of the respect for law that is so vital to the democratic way of life.

Reading the law with its recognition of equality and justice, but also with its inclusion of respect for the law, it could be determined that Law Day is a day that is highly relevant to what we see happening in our country here and now.

But if I had my choice to recognize only one of those holidays, Loyalty Day would be my personal preference.

So reconnect to your heritage of freedom today. Say what’s on your mind in the comment section below. But do keep this society civilized, mkay? Thanks.
