It is our sad duty to announce the passing of Reynaldo “Rey” Gonzalez on October 25th, from cardiac arrest while hospitalized for an underlying illness.
Rey was a long time contributor to this forum. His insights of living under the Castro regime in his childhood to serving in law enforcement in Miami-Dade county were fascinating. He was the embodiment of what it means to choose to be an American. He never forgot his heritage, and he embraced what freedom offered and made the world a better place.
We send our prayers for his children and his grandchildren, of whom he was endlessly proud, and whom he loved so much. They were his greatest joy.
Rest well, Rey. We love you and we will miss you!
I had the pleasure of having Rey as a friend, and the honor of being his friend. We spoke and texted semi-regularly, and always had a laugh together over one thing or another. He was a good man, and I’ll miss him. Rest well, Abuelo, we’ll see you again one day. CT

Reynaldo Gonzalez, known lovingly as Rey, was born on April 5, 1962, in Cuba, and passed away on October 25, 2026, in Port St. Lucie, Florida, after a life marked by service, devotion, and grace. He was a selfless man whose steady heart and gentle spirit touched all who knew him, and his memory will remain a bright and lasting light.
Rey built his life with courage, care, and quiet pride, A faithful soul with love as his lifelong guide. He was a son to Maria Gonzalez and José Gonzalez, cherished and dear, and a brother to Maria Isabel Herbach and Miguel Gonzalez, held close year after year.
In every role he carried, he gave his very best, with kindness in his actions and goodness in his chest. Rey was a proud graduate of Miami High Senior High School, and he later completed police academy training, preparing himself for a calling that would define much of his life. He served as a Miami-Dade County police officer for 30 years, and when he retired, he left behind a legacy of honor, discipline, and unwavering commitment. His work was more than a career, for it was a promise kept in service to others, and he carried that duty with strength and humility.
Through every shift and every challenge, he stood with resolve, a calm and trusted presence, helping problems dissolve. He served with steadfast purpose, with honor in his name, and every life he touched was never quite the same. Those who knew Rey remember a man who was loving, generous, and selfless in every season of his life. He found joy in simple, beautiful things, and his heart was full of interests that gave his days their melody. He loved reading history and writing poetry and novels, always drawn to words that could preserve the past or paint a feeling in the present. He loved to garden, tending life with patient hands, and he treasured time spent with his daughters and granddaughters, who brought him deep happiness and pride. And always, somewhere in the background, a Beatles album was playing, filling the air with music that seemed to match his gentle soul.
He found delight in pages, in petals, and song, in moments with his family where he felt he belonged. With daughters and granddaughters, his heart was made whole, and music, like his kindness, flowed straight through his soul. Rey is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Alexa Leon and Kayla Suarez, and by his granddaughters, Aryanna Leon and Emmy Leon, who will forever carry his love in their hearts. His family was the center of his world, and he gave them a steady example of patience, devotion, and care. He leaves behind not only memories, but a legacy of tenderness that will continue to guide those who loved him most.
He taught by the way that he lived every day, with a generous spirit that would not fade away. Though his earthly journey has now reached its rest, his love remains living in each heart he blessed. Rey’s life was a poem written in service and song, in family and faith, in quiet strength and enduring love. Though he has departed this world, the beauty of his life will continue to echo in the stories told, the lessons shared, and the memories cherished by all who knew him. As Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Rey lived in a way that made life gentler for others, and in that truth, his success shines brightly still.
May he rest in peace, surrounded by the mercy of God, and may his memory bloom wherever loved hearts have trod. For Rey was a man whose light will not depart, a loving, generous, selfless soul forever in the heart.”
We have the watch.
