Take a moment to imagine what he and his crew were doing. They were looking for an alternate route to Cathay and India to compete with Portugal’s attempts to do the same thing. They had no way of knowing that what was before them was anything other than open sea.
While he fell short in his goal, he still set the stage for exploration and colonization of a previously unknown country. So I’ll accept the achievement while acknowledging that he was a product of the times.
