OK, so the latest thing generating outrage is someone posting the cost of a burrito from Chipotle along with delivery. With the additional ingredients and delivery fee, it got damn expensive. Now I admit that my first response was the eyerolling at the people who were mad at the prices. But now that things have calmed, I looked into it a bit more.
Going out to eat is not a bad thing. Depending on where you go, it’s a good experience and can be a fun time with family or friends. But we have seen the prices jump ever since the Covid days with the argument of supply chains being disrupted. Covid is long gone but the increased expense is sticking around since the companies know that people will pay it.
Wages haven’t been keeping up with inflation and the younger ones that are starting out are barely out of poverty. The older generation encouraged college at the expense of all else and even the kids who took the STEM path are priced out by H1-B visa holders. Then there is the cost of a diploma that makes people debtors for a long time.
Get a car? Good luck. The Obama Administration thoroughly trashed the used car market and it’s very tough to get one that isn’t going to eat a good chunk of your finances.
Want to get married? I support that. But the expenses of life have made it tough to contemplate. Kids are being seen as even more of a pipe dream as well.
We have to make drastic changes in this country to get things turned around. Kurt Schlichter brought out the idea of getting the government out of student loans, deport all illegals, no more H1-B visas and eliminate DEI. Is it possible? A lot of ugliness will happen first but yes, it is. And frankly, I’d rather suffer with the consequences of those actions to get a better result.
I get the humor but the twenty dollar burrito is a warning instead of a punchline.
