An FR Fashion Rant for Singles

Okay people. We need to have a talk. This topic is not about politics. Nor is it about freedom, other than you are free to choose.

Tuesday night after teaching my dance classes, my aunt and I went to dinner at a great little Mexican food place then out for drinks at a local bar that has a relaxed atmosphere which we both enjoy. The owner is a former Houston Oiler and a super-nice guy. The atmosphere isn’t for everyone as some would consider the place “a dive,” but it’s the sort of dive where two single women can go and know they will be safe, and I like that.

Now the talk…

There’s casual dress, then there’s “oh, this is clean. It’ll do.” It’s not just when going to a relaxing bar, but with everywhere I go, people dress like slobs and look like they combed their hair with a hand mixer. Ill-fitting cut-off jeans and a wrinkled faded tee are things you wear to clean your toilets. Not what you wear when you are going to be in the presence of others for an extended period of time. I’m not saying you have to dress to impress when you are doing the grocery shopping, but come on.

I first noticed this trending phenomenon years ago with men. But now I see more and more women who go out to dinner or to a bar with their hair uncombed and pulled up into a ratty, messy ponytail and clothes that would even make a homeless man would turn up his nose.

What really amuses me about this is when I listen to the conversations being had by these disheveled debs and dudes, it’s always the same thing. “I haven’t been on a date in forever. There’s just no good men/women anymore.”

You’ve heard the phrase “dress for the job you want?” Well, the same goes for dating or wanting to date. Take a little pride in your appearance. A decent pair of jeans or slacks that fit, paired with a shirt that doesn’t look like you pulled it out of the clean clothes pile that’s been sitting in a corner waiting to be folded for three days, goes a long way in attracting some positive attention. Ladies, a ponytail is perfectly fine, but brush your hair first. And for you guys…comb your hair, and trim your beard or mustache if you have one. If you don’t have one, then shave. Also, Disney and Marvel Comics themed shirts are fine for chilling around the house or running to the store, but not for dining out. Again, you don’t need to wear your Sunday best to go have a drink, but at least look like you give a damn about yourself.

This is all just my opinion of course. But being what I consider a good single woman, this is my advice. Just like your body language silently tells people about you and what you are thinking, so does your appearance.

And now for some other fashion do-not-ever-do advice for you men…DRESSES ARE NEVER OKAY.

But you are still free to choose what image you project to the masses. For now.
