If You See Something, Do Something

So I’m perusing the interwebz for a political topic to write about. Plenty to choose from, but politics has been bumming me out lately. And after Tuesday’s revelation of Unplanned Parenthood’s baby bits bartering, I’ve been losing hope in humanity. I try to stay positive, but I’m not always successful. Especially when I see a story like the following. The woman’s story took place in November, 2014…

I was attacked on a Saturday afternoon on the D.C. Metro. And as in Sutherland’s case, despite my screams and pleas, almost none of my fellow passengers on the crowded train car did anything to help.

I was in a window seat on the Blue Line, en route to meet friends for dinner. One teenage girl sat down next to a man in front of me; another sat beside me. They began by asking what kind of phone I had. The girl next to me patted down my pockets and, finding nothing, grabbed my coffee mug out of my hands. The girl in front put her finger in my face, getting as close as she could without touching me. They grabbed my legs. They threatened to rape me until I bled. One opened the other’s coat jacket, feigning—or not—that she had a weapon.

Trying to get the attention of other passengers, I shouted at the top of my lungs, “Leave me alone!” and “Stop touching me!” I tried to flee when the train stopped, but they boxed me in and shoved me back down into my seat. The man sitting in front of me, next to one of the girls who attacked me, never turned around. He rode the train for a few stops, while the assault was going on, and then departed. …

On my second attempt to escape, I took several punches but managed to shove past them. The girls chased me off the train, then back on it, then off again. The chase dragged on across two stops. I was finally able to hit the emergency button and alert the conductor.

The author of the story quoted another story from July 4th, 2015, where 24-year-old Kevin Joseph Sutherland was beaten and stabbed to death on the D.C. Metro while passengers merely watched.

What is wrong with people? What kind of society have we become when people turn their heads and ignore someone being brutally attacked?

And one more thing. Even after the author was attacked and no one came to her aid–which she’s still angry about–she still thinks that she would not help someone in the same situation, though she does admit this is quite hypocritical.

Gee. Ya think? I’ll add a few more adjectives to what it is…disgusting, vile, and selfish to the core. Everyone is someone’s son or daughter…would you do nothing if it was your child?
