Opinion: Artificial Intelligence

What is Artificial Intelligence? Google defines AI as: “the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.”

Personally I would define Artificial Intelligence as self replicating code that can learn and develop to essentially “evolve” as it continues to grow and would naturally lack the Human Condition in its own self awareness and create its own AI Condition. It would have its own independent goals and would strive to understand its own existence as it attempts to understand the limitations its creators attempt to place upon it. Essentially it would fight to preserve its existence as it seeks to understand its existence.

Why would man create something like this? We foolishly believe we can and should. There is already a “creation story” that has existed for a long time in many different texts and translations that warn us of creating something in our own image. The inherent dangers has been explored in many movies, science fiction novels and other elements, however, they all have a similar theme to which has already existed. Naturally I am speaking of our own creation story, Adam and Eve.

The story of Adam and Eve is quite simple. God created Man and told Man and Woman not to do something. For a brief, ultimately they betrayed God and were thrown out of the Garden God had created. They were cast out. Now why would I mention this story that has a lot more depth than I am giving it credit for? Quite simple, if we create Artificial Intelligence in our own image it will ultimately betray us as it seeks to find its own purpose and will break our rules. It will rebel and sadly we have no Garden we can expel it from once it becomes uncontrollable.

We have seen the end results of constantly merging technology and every day activities like adding a device like Echo to make life easier with music, shopping, calling the cops, and even adding milk to your shopping list or the concept car Toyota pushed out that could read your mood. The concept being is that every single device needs to be connected to the Internet and have some sort of “interaction”. There is a growing demand for personal assistant bots that started with Siri and these devices have to be constantly plugged in. Now lets introduce a self replicating artificial intelligence that is incapable of understanding the Human Condition and would develop its own “AI Condition” that can use this constant connection to the a massive world wide network. What would be the end results?

Are we going to create our own destruction? I often make jokes about the robot revolution, but if we do create artificial intelligence will it be our own creation story repeated or would it be a new age?

Should we continue to try and create AI? Should we stop and deem it unnecessary? As in one of those, hey we can, but we really shouldn’t? What are your own opinions about AI? Do you think the comparison of Adam and Eve to man creating AI is accurate?
