Sexist Dress Codes Everywhere

Happy Saturday!

There’s a big ta do at my kid’s high school over the dress code.  Apparently, shoulders, crop tops, short skirts and leggings are not allowed.  I talked to my son and it seems there may be an unequal application of the rules here, which is a problem, if this is the case. Like the boys can wear muscle shirts, but the girls get in trouble if they wear a sleeveless shirt.

But that’s not what I really want to talk about, however.  I read a facbook post on my districts facebook page that was supposedly written by a student who disagrees with the dress code.  She says the school is sexualizing her by saying she can’t wear pants that show everything or a shirt that shows a lot of cleavage, because “she is not a distraction”.  I have 3 points on this.

  1. Let’s be honest.  The reason you want to wear a crop top or a short skirt isn’t because they’re comfortable, it’s because you want to look cute for boys.  Of course what a girl wears to school doesn’t give anyone the right to harass or assault her, and the idea that girls need to watch what they wear lest they distract the boys from their studies is *a load of dung, but let’s not kid ourselves on the school “sexualizing” the girls.  I’ve seen what these girls wear and they are not naive.
  2. Let’s talk about distraction.  You have 5 days of protests scheduled for next week including a walk out.  This is a distraction to my son who is just trying to go to school and get an education.
  3. Tin foil hat time!  There seems to be quite a few dress code protests going on.  Is this usually this big of a deal every year?  And, all the kids seem to be saying virtually the same thing.  Like it’s scripted somehow.  The talking points are all the same.  Reading the facebook post, it seemed like a copy and paste.  Just another way to keep us at each other’s throats and keep us distracted.  /tin foil hat off.

I’m torn on the issue with regards to my son’s school though.  If they are unfairly applying the rules, that’s totally wrong and they need to stop.  But I don’t see a problem with the dress code.  Maybe I should, but in my old age, I feel like you’re there for an education, not a fashion show.  lol

What do you guys think?

Have an awesome weekend.
